George Washington, first President of the United States of America, inherited Mount Vernon from his half brother Lawrence Washington in 1754, and built his own additions over the next roughly 30 years.
In 1860 the estate was purchased by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, who maintain it as a historical site open to the public.
